Open Francophone Spatial Data Infrastructure (IFL)
The Open Francophone Spatial Data Infrastructure (IFL) is an instance of the open-source, interoperable, and modular geOrchestra solution deployed by LLG.
The IFL is designed to support capacity-building initiatives (training/self-training) and the sharing of open geographic data (discovery, visualization, and access) carried out in the Global South, in accordance with the practices and ethics of the OpenStreetMap project, the free software movement, and open data, and in line with community-based and/or social and solidarity economy principles.
OpenStreetMap ETL in English and French
To facilitate the reuse of OpenStreetMap data in French-speaking countries in the Global South, LLg has implemented an ETL (extract, transform, load) system that allows users to download detailed OSM thematic layers for 26 countries from the IFL, using drop-down menus or map contexts that also enable users to view, query, and filter the data.
These layers are available both in their original English version and in a French translation. They cover the full scope and flexibility of OSM data and are continuously updated, with updates synchronized with the main OpenStreetMap project database every few minutes.
Handbook of Free Geomatics and Open Data
Since 2014, we have been developing a “Guide de la géomatique libre et de de la donnée ouverte” (“Handbook of Free Geomatics and Open Data” in French) that offers a self-guided learning path designed to help users engage with all stakeholders in the geomatics field through the practices and resources of the OSM project and their applications in mapping and geographic information systems (GIS).
This handbook, conceived and designed for emerging Geomatics 2.0 practitioners in French-speaking countries of the Global South, covers the following areas:
- Basic Concepts of Open OSM and Open Data
- Open OSM and Open Data Resources
- Creating OSM Data
- Using OSM Data in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) via QGIS, in Web Mapping via uMap, and in Geographic Data Infrastructure (GDI) via geOrchestra
Guide to Organizational Commons
Published in 2014, this French-language guide is a collection of open-source organizational resources designed to support the launch and/or strengthening of community and professional organizations, particularly for individuals and groups active in the OSM project within French-speaking countries in the Global South.
It enables users to draft action plans, technical and financial reports, descriptions of technical services or activities, and accounting records, as well as to learn about economic practices and examples of existing structures in the OSM field, and to develop a strategy or digital communication plan.
