IFL – Free Francophone SDI
The Infrastructure de données spatiales Francophone Libre – IFL (for Free Francophone Spatial Data Infrastructure) is an instance of the open-source, interoperable, and modular geOrchestra platform deployed by LLg.
Les Libres Géographes collective discovered geOrchestra in 2015 and, thanks to the implementation of a test instance at the AgroCampus in Nantes, has since promoted the project and integrated a geOrchestra component into its activities. Starting in 2019, LLg wanted to have its own instance, which was set up and has since been maintained by JDev.
The IFL is designed to support capacity-building initiatives (training/self-training) and the sharing of open geographic data (discovery, visualization, and access) carried out in the Global South, in accordance with the practices and ethics of the OpenStreetMap project, the free software movement, and open data, and in line with community-based and/or social and solidarity economy principles.
The IFL is not designed for 24/7 service continuity in accordance with INSPIRE-type requirements and is intended for users who can accommodate potential service interruptions of 24 to 48 hours.
The architecture serves four main purposes:
- Provide a digital learning environment for self-directed learning and/or conducting training workshops
- Provide an IDS for various pathways for the promotion and sharing of open reference vector data:
- throughout a geomatics training program
- within open data communities of practice
- through services provided by professionals in the field
